A classic illustration of partial obedience can be found in the story of King Saul in 1 Samuel 15. Saul was given clear instructions by God through the prophet Samuel regarding a battle. However, he chose to keep some of the spoils instead of fully obeying God's command. When confronted, Saul attempted to justify his actions, saying he intended to use the animals for sacrifices.
